I'm ready. Okay, Alright. My name is Dartricia Rollins, and I'm here with Ashby Combahee and we are interviewing Kae Goode for the We Tell Our Own Stories: Reproductive Justice Oral Histories event. Today is November 16, 2024, and Georgia Dusk: a southern liberation oral history project is conducting this oral history at Loudermilk Conference Center in downtown Atlanta as part of JusticeNOW2024 a cross-movement, power-building, and power-shifting national conference. You have been asked to participate in this oral history as part of the documentation of the long history of resistance, struggle, and organizing in Georgia and across the US South. SPARK RJ is one of the central organizations within this legacy of community networks, organizing strategies, and resources for healing in response to constant state repression. The oral history interviews provide elements of history that are often not apparent in traditional archival documents or dominant media. The interviews enable participants to reclaim the narrative and historical representation of reproductive justice organizing and movement building. But we still, we, I still connected with folks, and we created, well, it was already created, but I joined, like a Black student union that was there, and I think that was one of my like, I guess, early adult political, like politicization, like spaces like, where I, I guess, kind of started building my politic up. And this was like, before I transitioned, I'm a trans woman, and yeah, it's like, once I started transitioning, I started identifying with being, like, gender expansive at one point. And around that same time, I became, like, the president of Black Student Union, and when I became the president, I dealt with, like, a lot of transphobia, because, like, people weren't really trying to, I guess, engage with me. You know, like a lot of like, Black men in the space were just uncomfortable, or they ended up, like, I don't know, shifting to other like, student led orgs on campus, because, like, they didn't really, I don't know, vibe with me, and that really puzzled me, because I'm like, I'm the same person. We're like, aren't we, like, in joint struggle, we're niggas. Can I say, niggas? *laughter* (Dartricia: yep), like, we niggas. What's up? Like, what's going on? So I was just really lost and like, really hurt, and my I had a mentor that, in a way, was kind of like a father figure to me, and he kind of like supported me and like guided me and gave me just different resources. He, like gave he introduced me to Janet Mock, and after that it was over, *laughter* and I just really started growing from there. And I was just like, obsessed with her, and, yeah, I just started trying to, I guess, learn more about, like, my own transness, my identity, connecting that like to my history and thinking about other Black women, yeah. And just, I guess, growing in that way. And after that, I was just like, I'm too big for this school. Like, I need to find community in a real way. So I started, I was trying to come to Atlanta and, like, find different spaces that I can, like, get involved with, like, different organizations. So then I found SnapCo. I went to, like one or two of their things, and then I, I don't know, ended up going to, like a SFQP (Southern Friend Queer Price) event. And then I met Michaela, y'all know, (collective yeah,) and Taylor Alexander. And then somehow I ended up at a Spark (RJ NOW) event. I ended up going to, like their Fire Camp. Somebody like, sent me the information, and I just ended up, like, really sticking with Spark and like, trying to really be involved in any way possible. And, yeah, I guess that's my background.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=288.0,473.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/26","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Dartricia Rollins \n\nOh, that was wonderful. And I feel like, at the time, like I just really felt drawn to queerness. I didn't really know why. *laughter* I knew why, you know, and I don't know, I just really felt it here. I felt like, when I I had moved to Detroit to move my mom, and it just felt so and in the in that moment, it just as like a teen trying to, like, find themselves. I felt so I don't, know, restricted, and I also, like, didn't have as much access. My dad, like, owned a business down here, so I was able to, like, kind of work with him and like, or work in his business, and I don't know, express myself. I buy my own clothes and, like, wear whatever I wanted to wear. But up north, well, I went to school up north, it was just like, uniform and, like, I had to wear loafers and stuff like that. You know, I couldn't really make it fashion. Like, I love fashion, so, like I wasn't really able to express myself in that way, and I just felt like, I don't know I was able to do that here. And also thinking of like my ancestors, like the ones that are living and the ones that aren't. Both sides of my family, my mom, my dad is originally from Detroit, and then my mom is from New Jersey, and they met in New Jersey, but both sides are like, from the south. They're both from Georgia. So like, my grandma, my grandma's side, my mom's side is like, from Griffin, Georgia. I don't know where my dad is from. My dad's side is from, but, like, I know my dad's side moved to Detroit to work. For, like, Ford or GMC, you know, and then my grandma and like her husband, and like whoever else moved to New Jersey to like just, I guess, have better resources, but I don't know, yeah, I just really felt called here. It just felt like it's something here, and I need to figure it out. And I think through that, I was able to, like, really find myself and like, I don't know, grow *Yeah* So even if I, if I ever leave Atlanta, I feel like I don't know the South will always just be like, home. But also I still had to think about some of the like, microaggressions that may show up still, and like, fight against that, or, like, make room for not just myself, but like, other people, other trans and gender expansive folks. So yeah, I think in the beginnings, it was, like, pretty interesting. But I think as I started creating my carving out my own path, I was just like, I can do something myself. I don't have to be in these spaces, I can go and build community in these other ways. And I think one thing that I'm really proud of is that, like, the organizing department that I supervise, like, is like two other Black trans people, and the work that I told myself that I really wanted to do was, like, really invest in like, the leadership of like, Black trans and gender expansive folks. So I think I don't know my heart just feels full. Just really thinking about that and thinking about like, the ways I've helped and supported other Black trans people.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=653.0,754.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Ashby Combahee \n\nI would love to hear. So I feel like, in that I don't know, I was able to, like, just do different things. One of the things I'm really proud of is the Trans Resource Guide that I created over at Spark. At first, it was just like me and two of my other co-workers, Carter and Erin, and we were just like, oh, we want to do this thing, but we always struggle at Spark with like, capacity. So just like, oh, we gotta do these different things. But also we want to do this. We want to do that, and I wanted to do like a name change, like clinic or whatever. And we wasn't really, weren't really able, I wasn't really able to, like, meet some of those goals until we, like, kind of built our capacity up by bringing in new folks. So like, something that I'm really proud of is being able to, like, see some of the visions and like goals that I had for myself to still be able to exist without me. So like that, one of the community organizers was, like, kind of really leading the work with the name change clinic, like, she kind of came in and was like, Okay, we're gonna work with this person. We're gonna do this. And I'm like, Yes, love that. And then, like, even with the resource guide, we're working on the volume too soon, and it's like the new another new organizer that we have our base building and culture organizer. He's really just like, Okay, I'm going to do this. I'm going to do this next year. And it's just like, I don't know. I think that's beautiful in itself, because one thing that I really learned from this work is that, like, we're always supposed to, like, move ourself out of a job at the end of the day, like we're not supposed to be there forever. So it's like we're supposed to create room for new folks and invest in the leadership of other people. So I think one thing that really feels good to me is like, wow, I really am not doing this anymore, even though I love, you know, doing all these different things and connecting with people in these, like, particular ways. It's beautiful that somebody else is, like, able to lead that work. And it's not just me, because it's like, I don't know sometimes, and it's weird I feel like people get so, like, lost in just like, them being the person that does the thing. And it's like, but the beautiful thing, sorry, the beautiful thing about that is, I mean, it's not, you're not supposed to be the one doing, doing the work alone. You're supposed to be doing it with, like, community, with the other folks that you're working with. So it's like, it's not about like, the optics. It's about like, just community and like building and like growing in the ways that we truly can, I guess. And then another thing that I'm proud of is also, just like, as an artist, I like to tell myself that I'm, like, a multi-disciplinary artist, like I'd like to try different things. And like, I write poetry. I'm a writer, like, I don't know, I give myself, like, a times, like, work on these different things, and I'm like, Okay, let me go to this. Oh, let me go to that. So in like, 2019 I like, raised money to get an iPad. And I was like, I want to learn how to do digital art. Like, I always draw and sketch and stuff like that. But I was like, this could really be fun. So I really taught myself how to do that. And, like, I got this application called procreate, and I just, like, really started learning how to do digital art. And what came with that was like, I guess people started seeing my journey, and was like, Oh, well, can we pay you to do this? Oh, can we pay you to do that. And I'm like, hell yeah, give me the money. I'll take it all. So yeah, I feel like that was really like a win for me, because it allowed me to build with more people, and then also ended up ending up being being able to like, support my community members, like I said earlier, like with resources and like fundraising efforts. It was really exhausting, like doing that on the internet, like, you know, in 2020. *Yeah* But like, people got their money, and I love to see it like I loved seeing people like, have getting their resources met. I mean, getting their needs met. Even myself. I ended up like, damn, I need to show up for myself. And I was able to raise like, 32,000 (dollars) for, like, my, like, gender affirming, like care. *yes* And when I tell y'all!!! I saw, when I saw the money in my account, though, I was like, Oh, that's not real. There's no way. So, yeah, it just felt really good in that moment, but also, like, I don't know, in that time, it felt good to be able to be like, Oh, I would have my consultation. I'm like, Oh, I would like my surgery. And they're like, Oh, well, is this much money? How much do you think? How much time do you think you need to I was like, Oh, here you go. The checks? Okay, yeah, yes, yeah. Here we go, yes. And it just ate, like, it felt so good to be able to, oh, even travel for a consultation. I'm like, I could just do this and not have to think about, oh my god, like, rent, oh my god, bills, you know. So it felt really good to do that, but now I got insurance. So, you know.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=821.0,1136.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/40","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Ashby Combahee \n\nShoutout to insurance.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=1136.0,1139.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/41","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kae Goode \n\nEven though they be trying to finesse you. And when I've talked to friends who are like, I'm ready for the next step of my transition, I don't know what to do next. I'm like, Damn here you go. This is something that you can, like, use to at least know what's available to you. And I think you've also like modeled what feels like we're working towards is that everyone has the capacity to be able to access that gender affirming care, to also be able to find community and recognize that they are not alone in this experience. Yeah, right, and like can really grow with each other through this process. And so this makes me want to lead to one of our last few questions, but I will pause in case you have something Dartricia.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=1150.0,1204.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Dartricia Rollins \n\nYeah, because I actually want to reframe the last question, yes, um, because over the time that you know, we've been recording oral histories, Spark has come up a few times. But one of the things that I often think of when I think of like, the landscape of reproductive, reproductive justice organizations and like, you know, where everybody kind of fits in, I think of Spark as being one of like, the more like, queer like it is, like, like, really explicit, and some of like, the like, the the work and so the kind of final question I want to reframe is, how are trans liberation and reproductive justice and reproductive liberation intertwined?","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=1219.0,1260.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/46","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kae Goode \n\nOh, okay, I think for one that really makes me happy to hear that like folks are just, like, I don't know, really connected. And like are receiving the things that I don't know. We hope that folks receive from, like, the work that we do. And also I'm happy that, you know, you were able to, like, get your things as far as, like, from the resource guide um, that's, that's really cool. That's, that was, like, the goal, you know, um, but also, when I think about, like, trans liberation, I just think about, like, when we have the conversations in RJ, like, being able, like, bodily autonomy, being able to make safe and sustainable decisions, mean not sustainable. Being able to make safe decisions, like, about your body, being able to, like, I don't know...just have the the powers in your hands and not like, oh, whatever somebody puts in like, law or bill or whatever that they try to put in place to, like, try to tell you that you can't do this thing with your body. And I think that that conversation is very much connected to abortion. I think a lot of RJ folks really focus on abortion, not a lot, but some folks focus on abortion, rightfully so. But also, like, there's more. But I think when I think about that. I think about like that and like access, like the need and like bodily autonomy. I think it just really, just, I don't know, shows how connected it is and how like they're inseparable. I also think about, I don't know, just like love and community and connection and like, everyone needs that and deserves that. So I think when I think about, like trans liberation, that's like a big part of it. I also think about one thing we always say at Spark is just like, really talking about, like the power dynamics and like focusing on those who are furthest from proximity to power. That's how we truly get free. So I think when we think about, like, trans liberation and like the RJ movement as a whole, is really important that we like center, like trans and gender expansive folks because of these conversations, but that also, like, I'm gonna stretch it into a like, more expansive conversation, talking about, like, just like different bodies, folks who have like different disabilities, folks who I don't know live in different countries and may have like limited resources, or, like, when I think about, like, everything happening with Palestine, umm...I don't know. I know I'm like, all over the place, but just really bringing it to like, folks deserve, like, freedom and like, true autonomy and just like agency and safety and love and true care and transformation too, which is a part of abolition, right? But I don't know. I think when we think about how they're all intertwined, I'm just thinking about all these, like keywords that people throw out all the time. And, yeah, I don't know. Okay, does that answer the question?","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=1260.0,1447.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/47","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Dartricia Rollins \n\nYes, yes, yes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=1447.0,1449.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/48","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kae Goode \n\nI be yapping sometimes. (no, that's real) We had, we did, like a live taping of our podcast, but and it was like, Erica Hart and Raquel Willis and our Executive Director, KR or Dr Krystal Redmond. And I know it was just really beautiful, like just listening to their conversation. I told, like, Erica. I was like, yeah. Almost cried a little bit. I was like, my makeup getting in my eye, but it was just like, I don't know, beautiful to see them, but also, just like, beautiful to be in the space. And then another joke that I had with my co-worker, because we always are, like, being silly. But I was just like, it really felt like family, like be like, being in movement with like, the right people. It really feels like family. Like, yes, you know, somebody will get your nerves, somebody gonna say something. You gotta call them in. But also it's just like that doesn't exist anywhere like else, as far as like, when I think about like corporate or like thinking about like other just jobs, but I think that that speaks to just the work that we're doing. Like, it's more than the job, right? It's like our everyday lives, and that's why sometimes it's so easy to get burnt out, because it's like, Damn, it's everywhere. When can I breathe? But, yeah, but yeah. I just really want to let that be my last point that, like, I don't know it's just it really feels like beautiful to be in community with people, and I know that they're lines that get blurred, you know, as far as being co-workers or being whatever, but I think at the end of the day, it just feels really full to like, I don't know, be in space, be here, even be in this. I don't know what this is RV? (Dartricia: this bus) This is really cool, like being able to like, connect and collaborate and like, grow and learn from each other, which is, sorry, one more thing, which is something that me and my co-facilitator were talking about yesterday when we were trying to create, like, a shared learning space. It was like, I don't know, like we're facilitating, but also we're learning from each other. Like, you're educators, we're educators. Like, there is nobody who's like, above anybody. So I think being in this space is like a reminder of that. It's like we're all learning from each other at the end of the day, yeah and yeah. I just love that.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408#t=1471.0,1631.0"},{"id":"https://georgiadusk.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3341/collection_resources/150972/file/278408/transcript/94412/annotation/54","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Dartricia Rollins \n\nI love that.
